Employee Loyalty at its Finest

ipsta2006monb.jpgToday’s college grads are taught that it’s perfectly normal to have several different jobs throughout their lives. In fact, changing jobs is actually glorified in our current society. Generally, an employment switch means you’re moving on to something you’re better suited for; a position that will make you happier and may even make you more money.

However, it was not so long ago that employees worked their way up the proverbial corporate latter and remained loyal to one company for a lifetime. You can still see this sort of mentality in the baby boomer generation. For instance, one of my father’s favorite past-times involves a long and animated rendition of his rise to vice presidency from a lowly stock boy position. Even though I do a lot of eye-rolling during this process, I must admit, the fact in itself is pretty impressive. In my limited years on this planet, I’ve exceeded the amount of jobs my father had by about nine.

I was recently made aware of a similarly loyal employee at Centrum. Marvin, a maintenance and custodial technician, has been working for Centrum for nearly twenty-five years. I had the pleasure of conducting a short interview with him just yesterday.

Centrum: What prompted you to take a job with Centrum?
Marvin: Well, at the time I came on, they were doing a project on Chestnut and State. They needed help there and it seemed like a good, steady job to me.
C: It’s been quite a few years of steady! Very impressive.
C: What have your duties consisted of over the years?
M: I’ve done a bit of everything. General building maintenance has consumed most of my time.
C: What aspects of the company have kept you working for them for so long?
M: I’ve always been treated very well here. I’m appreciative of everything the folks at Centrum—particularly [Centrum partners] John and Larry—have done for me.
C: Well, when employees have the sort of work ethic and loyal disposition you do, it’s only right to treat them accordingly.
C: What are some of your fondest moments on the job?
M: There have been many, but I always loved kidding around with John and Larry.
C: Do you plan on staying with Centrum till retirement?
M: If they’ll have me!
C: I don’t think you have anything to worry about there.
