Somewhere along the line, America has wizened to face the daunting reality that recycling one’s house-hold plastics doesn’t translate into a seamless ozone-layer. Everywhere you look, companies are boasting their GREEN initiatives. From Caribou Coffee’s proud claim to be part of the “Rainforest Alliance,” an environmental organization that works to protect ecosystems, to Apple’s pledge to take all possible measures to minimize the environmental impact of it’s product, it’s clear that green business practices are of top priority to the American consumer.
As a Centrum employee, and an American consumer, I was elated to find out that my company has jumped on the green band-wagon and is implementing eco-friendly practices at it’s north-side project, The Lofts at Lakeview Collection. The plan for a green Lakeview Collection looks something like this:
Construction Features:
-Recycled and locally-sourced materials preferred in all construction
-No environmentally harmful CFC’s used in building air conditioning systems
-Site chosen near public transit to reduce miles driven by residents
Building Features:
-Green roof insulates and reduces heating and cooling energy waste
-Exceeds Chicago city standards for target energy efficiency
-Water savings from exclusive use of Energy Policy Act-compliant plumbing
-Ventilation meets all federal air quality requirements to support healthy living
-Reduced heat island effects from underground parking, white PVC roofing, light-colored concrete and landscaping
Residence Features:
-Two-stage grease exhaust sanitizing system eliminates 99.9% of particulates
-Low volatile organic compound carpeting to reduce toxic emissions
-Glass facade and large windows insulate and prevent wasted energy
-No formaldehyde or endangered wood species used in any cabinetry
-Convenient bicycle storage encourages residents to ride instead of drive
The Roosevelt Collection is next on the docket for “green-ing.” Stay-tuned for details.
